Tanking Atlanta Hawks

What the hell is wrong with the Atlanta Hawks? As of this post (01/05/2018) they have the worst record in the NBA at 10 wins and 27 losses; one game behind the Lakers.

The Lakers have a valid excuse and myriad championships to support a few down years, coupled with the retirement of one of the top 5 players in NBA history - the "Black Mamba" Kobe Bryant. Either the Atlanta Hawks management and ownership are purposely trying to tank - for the past 3 years - or they are complete idiots when it comes to running a sports franchise.

Consider the players they have traded in the last few years and got absolutely nothing in return (in alphabetical order):
  • DeMarre Carroll
  • Jamal Crawford
  • Al Horford
  • Tim Hardaway Jr
  • Dwight Howard
  • Joe Johnson
  • Kyle Korver
  • Paul Millsap
  • Mike Scott
  • Thabo Sefolosha
  • Josh Smith
  • Jeff Teague
In the Feb 2015 NBA Allstar game, the Hawks fielded 4 players: Paul Millsap, Kyle Korver, Jeff Teague and Al Horford. Most of the 2014-2015 season Atlanta was considered one of the top 3 teams in the league. Unfortunately, they ran into King James and the Cavaliers in the playoffs, which marked the end of the Hawks season (as it has been for all Eastern Conference teams facing LeBron James in the past 7 years).

In 2010 the Boston Celtics represented the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals. Since then it's been King James: 4 years with the Miami Heat and the last 3 with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Seven years in a row is a miraculous accomplishment (LeBron has won 3 out of 7) but also suggest why LeBron will not supplant the G.O.A.T., MJ.

Michael Jordan appeared in the NBA Finals 6 times and won all 6 without ever going 7 games - two "Three-peats." If MJ doesn't take 2 years off to play baseball, he and the Bulls could have definitely won 8 in a row. Hakeem Olajuwon and his Houston Rockets won the 2 years Jordan was out; no way they win even one championship against Scottie Pippen, MJ, Rodman, the sharp shooters and other supporting cast, if MJ was not trying to play professional baseball.

But I digress, WTF is wrong with the Hawks?

Kobe Retiring After NBA Season

from BleacherReport.com

We've seen retirement press conferences. We've seen retirement open letters. We've seen retirement tweets.

On Sunday, Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant gave us a first: a retirement poem.

In a piece posted on the Players' Tribune, Bryant wrote a poem titled "Dear Basketball," which announces the future Hall of Famer's intention to retire after the 2015-16 season:

You gave a six-year-old boy his Laker dream
And I’ll always love you for it.
But I can’t love you obsessively for much longer.
This season is all I have left to give.
My heart can take the pounding
My mind can handle the grind
But my body knows it’s time to say goodbye.

Bryant, 37, will sit down with Robin Roberts of Good Morning America to further discuss the decision. In the final season of a two-year extension he signed with the Lakers in 2013, Bryant is averaging 15.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game—all numbers that rank among the worst of his career.

USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo said Bryant remains "in contention" for a roster spot for Team USA in the 2016 Olympics, per ESPN's Marc Stein.
